This companion guide to Is This Autism? A Guide for Clinicians and Everyone Else shows clinicians how to assess for the possibility of autism in clients of all ages.

Understanding of autism has greatly expanded in recent years, and many clinicians feel ill-equipped or confused about how to incorporate this knowledge into their diagnostic process. As a result, countless unidentified autistic people do not have reasonable access to proper identification or support. This book describes current assessment methods, including interviewing, rating scales, self-report measures, social cognition tests, and behavioral observations. It also provides guidance regarding cultural considerations, common mistakes, and how to communicate with and support clients through the diagnostic process.

This very practical clinical guide provides a clear and neurodiversity-affirmative approach to autism assessment, particularly for autistic individuals who have previously been missed. It is relevant to all healthcare professionals who want to learn how to identify autism in their clients.

I’m a speech-language pathologist and found the information in this book immensely helpful for my practice. I especially liked how the book manages to include neurodiversity and perspectives from autistic people while still remaining evidence-based and factual. Truly a gem, 10/10!

Dr. Henderson and her co-authors have written an incredibly helpful, readable book. I am a specialist in treating neurodiverse individuals and have been in the field for years, but have learned so much in reading these two companion books. Just as ADHD has been so underdiagnosed in girls, so too has Autism Spectrum Disorder. This book will be ground-breaking in bringing much-needed understanding and help to girls that have been forever misunderstood and overlooked. Kudos to Dr. Henderson and her co-authors.

Clinicians have to straddle the world between the medical model and the expectations of the systems (school, etc) in our world and the neurodiversity affirming model that places autism squarely in the realm of a natural way of existing. This book will help clinicians unlearn and relearn what autism is, while helping them write evaluations that support their autistic clients in having the official paperwork needed to get appropriate accommodations to navigate the expectations of systems in our neuro-conforming world.
