After reading the GAPS diet book, I decided it was the ONLY diet that actually made sense. Basically, turn the clock back 200 years and don't be afraid of eating animal fat, olive oil, coconut oil, and peanut oil. Instead, be afraid of canola, corn oil, and all those other nasty seek oils introduced in the 1970s. The GAPS diet is based on bone broth. Don't buy the powdered stuff. It's best made yourself by boiling bones in a 6 quart pot with a tablespoon of salt and three tablespoons of Braggs Vinegar. It really does work, along with the other suggestions in the book, to heal your gut. Of course, it took a long time for me to ruin my gut, and so it took a while before I began to see the results, but it does work. I can now eat bread.

I was recommended this book by a friend of mine who’s daughter was diagnosed severe autistic. She assured me this diet made all the difference in her daughters life and I saw the fruits of that testimony. I was desperate by this time.
After an extremely stressful event in my life I became very sick with so many health issues. Allergies, Celiac, crones, intolerances to almost everything i ate, especially anything processed or had ANY additive like guar gum, “natural flavors” etc, I cut almost everything out of my diet. Even so, My organs began to swell, I looked more pregnant that my sister who was 6 months pregnant at the time.
I was so sick by the time i got the book my husband had to help me read the book and implement it, as well as make the food for me.
Slowly i began to feel better and get my life back slowly. I am so thankful my friend recommended this book and I am so thankful to Dr. McBride.
I completely disagree with the hateful, vitriolic comments about it being snake oil etc. They must be from big pharma. There was no doctor or allergy specialist who could help me. They were all baffled and mostly useless to my situation. Most Doctors know very little about these kind of gut issues.

This book has changed our lives! After I read this book our entire family started GAPS diet. This book provided so much information about how our guys are affected by environment. It tied up with everything I research prior to reading this book. My son has autism. Gut and brain connection is extremely important. We started GAPS intro 2.5 years ago and then we went to full gaps. My son who used to eat 8-to 10 things and some of them were processed foods. So with GAPS he now eats eats everything, his favorite thing is soup, he doesnt even want other foods. He finally potty trained after years of failed efforts, he learned several little words, made strides of improvement in every subject. His dictionary on his communication device exploded, his hyperactivity gone since week one. I used to not being able to sign his name in doc or therapist office because he would immediately run to the door and I would have to chase him the whole time. Since the start of GAPS intro diet he calmly sits and waits at the doctors office! I no longer have to put him in the buggy at the grocery store because he stopped running away and throwing items. All his teacher and therapist were amazed with his progress starting second week of the diet. They havent seen it before they said. I cant speak highly enough of this book. It changed our lives!

I have a friend who suffers from severe gastrointestinal issues as a complication from a case of Lyme Disease that went untreated for over a decade. My poor friend can't tolerate gluten, dairy, or even sugar! Even fruit sometimes gives him tummy trouble!

A friend told me about this book. After having her first baby, her digestion was just SHOT. No matter how much she ate, she just couldn't seem to absorb nutrients. She began researching her issues and came across this book. She began following its advice and suggested it to me for my friend.

It's an interesting premise: instead of just avoiding the foods that give you extreme problems, why not start from the beginning and heal your gut entirely? Get to the root of the problem!

When I gave it to my friend, he said it seemed like a really good plan; he did his own research and said that it works for the vast majority of people. He's going to talk to his doctor about one other option first, but he thinks he might try this approach once he's got enough time to dedicate to the first stage of this strategy. It requires a lot of time in the kitchen. But if that can give you hope that you might be able to eat without so many dietary restrictions in the future, it's worth the investment!

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride makes the science of the function of our bodies, so incredibly easy to understand! She gives you the why of foods, why you should or shouldn't eat them or when best to eat them or reintroduce them to your diet. Not just do this don't do that. It's a fantastic book, quick and easy to read. She equips you for success if you decide to make the changes to your diet. Highly recommend this book!

I'm in my early 30s, in the last couple of years I've developed food allergies to food groups I've always eaten. I've had bowel and gas issues for as long as I can remember. In the last few years, I've developed a severe debilitating complete body rash that has been unexplained by various doctors in various fields, until my functional doctor started talking gut health I really felt like it was going to be something I would have to deal with the rest of my life. He is the one who started working with me on healing my gut through diet and supplements, right in line with Dr. Campbell-McBride's research. Working with him in addition to reading her book and changing over to the GAPS diet has done wonders for my health and healing of my body!

I've been doing this diet for 7 weeks in an effort to cure my fibromyalgia. It is a doable diet, leaving me full and satisfied with my food. As this is for the long term, (at least two years, according to the author), this is a good thing. I'm currently in the stage I detox phase, which calls for eating bone broths, boiled meats, veggies, lots of animal fats, and increasing use of probiotics in the form of both supplements and foods. Its causing a lot of detox, so I am hopeful of a cure. The book is a fabulous lesson in nutrition, and from that point of view, I recommend it to everyone. On the other hand, the diet is complex and complicated, and requires organization and a lot of work. If you do it, you will need to access Dr Campbell-McBride's excellent website, where she has answered a lot of questions about the diet. As the information is densely packed, I would read the whole book first, then reread it and take notes, before starting the diet.

As an RN, I have researched fibromyalgia a long time, and had already come to the conclusion that although there are a lot of neurological issues with the disease, the origin of it is in the gut. I had tried boththe alternative vegan/juice fasting route, and anti-candida diets, which I was not able to sustain. The GAPS diet fits perfectly with my thinking about the disease, and

A person buys a book like Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) because you have a compelling reason. I bought this book because of children I know who are on the autism spectrum. If you or someone you know has stomach issues, this is a good book to read. Behavior issues often are related to nutritional deficits as well. Years ago when I was a young mother I was given an Adelle Davis book, Let’s Have Healthy Children. She made a good point then about the need to feed children right by staying away from processed foods and over-prescribed drugs so they will grow in healthy ways with strong physical bodies. I took it to heart and consciously chose the foods I would feed my children, even disregarding some of the popular fads and recommendations.
This book, as well, has lots to say about eating healthy foods in order to maintain a correct gut ecology which, basically, affects all other areas of the body. Some children and adults have a toxic gut which allows toxins to secrete into the body and eventually into their brains which causes adverse reactions. When this happens, it becomes difficult to maintain an ability to eat a healthy diet (the food doesn’t break down properly) or to absorb the nutritional benefits from the food they do eat. The stomach hurts so they eat a limited variety of foods, mainly carbohydrates. In time, with poor digestion and without a proper bacteria balance, the body’s systems become inflamed. From there, things go from bad to worse causing some of the illnesses mentioned in the title.
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD runs a clinic for children and adults who have autism, dyslexia, depression, schizophrenia, A.D.H.D, AD.D., eating disorders and such. She comments that people who suffer with these illnesses always have a digestion problem. The vegan diet is taken to task for depriving children of necessary nutrition that the body needs. The body becomes starved for what it needs (some animal protein) and then illnesses begin to occur, some quite severe. A special diet plus the ingesting of probiotics and nutritional supplements are recommended as a solution that will help the gut and then the whole body to return to optimum health.
    She makes a good point.

2 years ago I felt like a 90 year old woman due to psoriatic arthritis. I had a full time job and young kids and was desperate to feel better as I couldn't see myself being able to care for my family in the long run in my condition. The drugs that my doctor prescribed me had scare side effects and my mom, who had been on the drug for another auto-immune disease had had multiple cancers. This diet appealed to me because it was designed to be temporary. I was not interested in avoiding certain food groups for the rest of my life. Although I experienced some relief right away, I will admit it wasn't always "fun". My road to healing definitely saw a lot of ups and downs. It's definitely not a "quick fix", but when I thought about where I was when I started, I always felt I was doing at least a little better than that so that kept me going. The detox baths were key in helping get through the tough spots. I eventually discovered that I also had to watch my oxalate intake (no almond flour for me) and added in raw dairy, which has help me stick with the extra restrictions. Now I'm feeling so good. I no longer have arthritis pain but still have some minor skin problems. At first this diet seems overwhelming and impossible to stick to, but once you get your routines for making food and you start realizing how nourishing and filling the food is, other food looks less appealing and is easier to avoid. I now look at processed food as completely unappealing and even though I look forward to adding in starchy foods soon, I don't think I'll ever go back to eating as I did before. This is definitely a life-changing diet.

This has a lot of information. It is a lot of information to read and isn't super "fun" during the hard times of the detox period. I recommend you read this book before you get started and decide if it is for you to even get into. The information is technical but good. There are some recipes to follow and are pretty yummy.

I feel this book is a great resource if you are going to get into the GAPS diet. Don't miss the opportunity to read it first. I did not read it first and felt a little lost on how to proceed at times. My friend did read the whole book first and she constantly had the knowledge to help her through and was able to point me in the right direction when I was stressed "in the moment."

There is a lot in this book. Not a quick read. Not a fancy cookbook. IF you are expecting a book that completely details the concepts and ideas behind the creation of the GAPS diet then this is your book.

If you are truly ill, or are caring for a child or other loved one who is struggling, you will spare no expense and no effort to find solutions: we have one life, one body, and only one experience of them. With this in mind, I encourage you to take a look at this very interesting and forward-thinking book.
The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet was recommended to me by my Naturopathic MD, who said that I should read this book so as to fully understand the connection between the gut and the immune system.
Well, I have done so, and I have to say: this book is comprehensive, well-written, and I have decided that the dietary guidelines it presents are what I am going to be following for the next few years.
I would encourage anyone who is struggling with gut or autoimmune issues to read this book. (Of course, talk to your licensed health care provider, and see if these recommendations are right for you. Do not self-diagnose, or self-treat.)

My daughter has severe food and environmental allergies. Because of it, her skin breaks out with terrible eczema. It's been this way since she was a month old. Anti-allergy medicines didn't help and I am opposed to putting cortizone creams on her skin long term. We did this diet exclusively for 5 months and within a few weeks she was clear!!!! And, she was able to eat foods that she hadn't been able to in the past. I highly recommend the diet for healing....I often recommend it to people.

I did give it 4 stars because it is a very difficult diet to follow long term; which is what the diet requires. Like I mentioned, we did it for 5 months and had amazing results! We went off it, and for the first couple months she was clear...but now the eczema is back. We are planning on resuming the diet after the holidays. She is old enough to understand how she eats effects her skin, and she wants to go back on it. We haven't yet because (1) it is a lot of work, and (2) because well, it's a lot of work! I don't think you can get the amazing results without doing the work. If there was an easier way, we'd do it. So back on the diet we will go.
