Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride set up The Cambridge Nutrition Clinic in 1998. As a parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, she is acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and she has devoted much of her time to helping these families. She realized that nutrition played a critical role in helping children and adults to overcome their disabilities, and has pioneered the use of probiotics in this field. Her willingness to share her knowledge has resulted in her contributing to many publications, as well as presenting at numerous seminars and conferences on the subjects of learning disabilities and digestive disorders. Her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome captures her experience and knowledge, incorporating her most recent work. She believes that the link between learning disabilities, the food and drink that we take, and the condition of our digestive system is absolute, and the results of her work have supported her position on this subject. In her clinic, parents discuss all aspects of their child’s condition, confident in the knowledge that they are not only talking to a professional but to a parent who has lived their experience. Her deep understanding of the challenges they face puts her advice in a class of its own.
After an extremely stressful event in my life I became very sick with so many health issues. Allergies, Celiac, crones, intolerances to almost everything i ate, especially anything processed or had ANY additive like guar gum, “natural flavors” etc, I cut almost everything out of my diet. Even so, My organs began to swell, I looked more pregnant that my sister who was 6 months pregnant at the time.
I was so sick by the time i got the book my husband had to help me read the book and implement it, as well as make the food for me.
Slowly i began to feel better and get my life back slowly. I am so thankful my friend recommended this book and I am so thankful to Dr. McBride.
I completely disagree with the hateful, vitriolic comments about it being snake oil etc. They must be from big pharma. There was no doctor or allergy specialist who could help me. They were all baffled and mostly useless to my situation. Most Doctors know very little about these kind of gut issues.
A friend told me about this book. After having her first baby, her digestion was just SHOT. No matter how much she ate, she just couldn't seem to absorb nutrients. She began researching her issues and came across this book. She began following its advice and suggested it to me for my friend.
It's an interesting premise: instead of just avoiding the foods that give you extreme problems, why not start from the beginning and heal your gut entirely? Get to the root of the problem!
When I gave it to my friend, he said it seemed like a really good plan; he did his own research and said that it works for the vast majority of people. He's going to talk to his doctor about one other option first, but he thinks he might try this approach once he's got enough time to dedicate to the first stage of this strategy. It requires a lot of time in the kitchen. But if that can give you hope that you might be able to eat without so many dietary restrictions in the future, it's worth the investment!
I'm in my early 30s, in the last couple of years I've developed food allergies to food groups I've always eaten. I've had bowel and gas issues for as long as I can remember. In the last few years, I've developed a severe debilitating complete body rash that has been unexplained by various doctors in various fields, until my functional doctor started talking gut health I really felt like it was going to be something I would have to deal with the rest of my life. He is the one who started working with me on healing my gut through diet and supplements, right in line with Dr. Campbell-McBride's research. Working with him in addition to reading her book and changing over to the GAPS diet has done wonders for my health and healing of my body!
As an RN, I have researched fibromyalgia a long time, and had already come to the conclusion that although there are a lot of neurological issues with the disease, the origin of it is in the gut. I had tried boththe alternative vegan/juice fasting route, and anti-candida diets, which I was not able to sustain. The GAPS diet fits perfectly with my thinking about the disease, and
This book, as well, has lots to say about eating healthy foods in order to maintain a correct gut ecology which, basically, affects all other areas of the body. Some children and adults have a toxic gut which allows toxins to secrete into the body and eventually into their brains which causes adverse reactions. When this happens, it becomes difficult to maintain an ability to eat a healthy diet (the food doesn’t break down properly) or to absorb the nutritional benefits from the food they do eat. The stomach hurts so they eat a limited variety of foods, mainly carbohydrates. In time, with poor digestion and without a proper bacteria balance, the body’s systems become inflamed. From there, things go from bad to worse causing some of the illnesses mentioned in the title.
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD runs a clinic for children and adults who have autism, dyslexia, depression, schizophrenia, A.D.H.D, AD.D., eating disorders and such. She comments that people who suffer with these illnesses always have a digestion problem. The vegan diet is taken to task for depriving children of necessary nutrition that the body needs. The body becomes starved for what it needs (some animal protein) and then illnesses begin to occur, some quite severe. A special diet plus the ingesting of probiotics and nutritional supplements are recommended as a solution that will help the gut and then the whole body to return to optimum health.
She makes a good point.
I feel this book is a great resource if you are going to get into the GAPS diet. Don't miss the opportunity to read it first. I did not read it first and felt a little lost on how to proceed at times. My friend did read the whole book first and she constantly had the knowledge to help her through and was able to point me in the right direction when I was stressed "in the moment."
There is a lot in this book. Not a quick read. Not a fancy cookbook. IF you are expecting a book that completely details the concepts and ideas behind the creation of the GAPS diet then this is your book.
The Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet was recommended to me by my Naturopathic MD, who said that I should read this book so as to fully understand the connection between the gut and the immune system.
Well, I have done so, and I have to say: this book is comprehensive, well-written, and I have decided that the dietary guidelines it presents are what I am going to be following for the next few years.
I would encourage anyone who is struggling with gut or autoimmune issues to read this book. (Of course, talk to your licensed health care provider, and see if these recommendations are right for you. Do not self-diagnose, or self-treat.)
I did give it 4 stars because it is a very difficult diet to follow long term; which is what the diet requires. Like I mentioned, we did it for 5 months and had amazing results! We went off it, and for the first couple months she was clear...but now the eczema is back. We are planning on resuming the diet after the holidays. She is old enough to understand how she eats effects her skin, and she wants to go back on it. We haven't yet because (1) it is a lot of work, and (2) because well, it's a lot of work! I don't think you can get the amazing results without doing the work. If there was an easier way, we'd do it. So back on the diet we will go.
