Internal Family Systems Therapy with Children details the application of IFS in child psychotherapy. The weaving together of theory, step-by-step instruction, and case material gives child therapists a clear roadmap for understanding and utilizing the healing power of this modality. In addition, any IFS therapist will deepen their understanding of the theory and practice of Internal Family Systems by reading how it is practiced with children. This book also covers the use of IFS in parent guidance, an important aspect of any therapeutic work with families or adult individuals with children. The poignant and humorous vignettes of children’s therapy along with their IFS artwork make it an enjoyable and informative read.

    It’s a great resource
An excellent overview and reference for introducing IFS. I especially like the guided questions to prompt parts exploration.

This book lays out the foundations of IFS and its applications with children in a straightforward and simple manner that is surprising enjoyable to read. I'm a therapist who recently transitioned from working primarily with adults to working with children and adolescents, and I have found this book immeasurably helpful in translating the IFS model into a format that is easy and effective to use with children.

This is a gem of a book and a must read for any child therapist. Spiegel introduces and clearly outlines Schwartz' model of IFS and then through her compelling and exquisite case studies of her child clients, brings the model to life.
Reading it is like being immersed in great supervision. The reader will learn how to help children recognize and externalize their troubling symptoms and understand them as important "parts" of their inner systems rather than pathological defects. With the help of Spiegel's compassion, humor and acceptance these children learn to view their behaviors and feelings with a kinder and more self loving lens, and so to heal and transform.
In its authenticity, simplicity and eloquence this book will inspire child therapists to study and start using IFS with their clients.
Kudos and gratitude to Lisa Spiegel for this important contribution.

This book is amazing and a MUST READ for any clinician who wants to understand the Internal Family Systems Model! Although the author writes this book for therapists who are working with children, the concepts can easily be applied to adult clients. Spiegel is a master at breaking down the theory and gives detailed instruction on how to utilize this model in treatment. The case material is invaluable, and uses children's artwork to clearly demonstrate how to access, externalize, and begin to develop a relationship with ones "parts". I was truly moved by the success that this author has using IFS therapy with children, and I hope to do the same by following the detailed instruction in this book. From a compassionate, curious, and open hearted space, Spiegel teaches her clients....and all who read it... to do the same, which is where the real healing begins!

This book was a delight! Spiegel writes clearly and lucidly, explaining the concepts of the IFS therapy model through brilliant examples from her child clients. Her levity, compassion, and care shine through out, as does her devotion and belief in the IFS model. Although I am not a mental health professional, I found the book accessible. The content is extremely engaging and intriguing. It made me feel profoundly hopeful that Spiegel and others like her are helping children reclaim their inherent joy not through an attitude of negation, but through this method of acknowledging, allowing, and understanding all of their parts.

I highly recommend this book. I'm not a clinician, but a yoga teacher and musician with a keen interest in the IFS system. It's both a very good introduction to key concepts of IFS, and a clear description of the authors extensive experience working with children using IFS. It's well written, concise, and easy to read.
